Upon moving into our house two years ago, we painted all of the walls white or grey. I remember my mom wondering why on earth we would strip all the color out, that our home would look sterile, cold, and boring, but I was sure it would have a contrary effect. Grey, at least, is indeed a color to us! For our reading nook, we used a dark grey (magnetite by Martha Stewart, pictured directly below) and for our bedroom and master bathroom, a light dove grey.
At the start of this new year, Pinterest released its list of top 100 trends for 2016, and as far as home interiors go, grey walls has climbed towards the top of the list.
I happen to love the color grey. Neither black nor white, but a spectrum in between, it’s non-commitall but makes a statement. What statement depends on what you’re trying to say with the rest of your room. With the help of a little analysis from color psychology, grey is said to feel neutral, futuristic, and it creates a sense of sophistication and calm, but can also portray a lack of energy, dreariness and boredom.
How to keep a room from invoking the dreaded grey boredom? Since grey is a cool tone, the key to making it feel more cozy and welcoming is to warm up the space. Try metallic fixtures, gold frames, chocolate brown wooden furniture, oversized paintings, a gallery wall exhibiting your family photographs, or a plush Persian rug.
Like black and white, grey goes with just about every other color, and looks great with other neutrals, like black, white, and brown. We’re also loving it with pale pinks and golds.
